Who's Here - Summer Lodown 2007

All the faces of summer on Ithaca. Visitors, ex-pats, the curious, the accidental, the transitory, the adventurers, the sailors, the backpackers, the walkers, the runners, the swimmers, the honeymooners, the retirees, the artists, the poets, the beautiful and the ugly. Faces from all over the world come to this small island and can end up on who's here for the world to see.

Right - Dennis Sikiotis is well known in Stavros for entertaining guests from his other home across the sea, Australia. This month his friends Richard, Katherine and son Oliver are visiting with him.

Sat 8 Sep - Above - Nigel Thomas and Janene Cox are on Ithaca for their 5th year in a row. Seems they have lots of great places to holiday, but Ithaca just continues to draw them back over and over. They come with a bag of full of novels and enjoy laying back as they go through them leaf by leaf. They're here from Staffordshire in the Midlands UK.

Mon 3 Sep - Left - Artist Chris Kandis is here from Melbourne Australia, celebrating 6 days of either constipation or concentration says his friend Peter Razos (right in pic left). Mr. Razos' humour was tinged a little with too much alcohol, so I didn't actually understand too much. Guess Chris could have both if suffering from either. Stin ygeia sou!

Above - Lucky (Mr. 5 months at Polis) with Melbourne friend Maria. Maria is also here from Melbourne Australia giving the Lucky man a hand. Left - Chris Bouras from Greenvale, Melbourne and girlfriend Alice Westmore from St. Kilda in Melbourne are here enjoying September on Ithaca.

Left - Robin and Finni, brother and sister, are here from the UK and have just popped over from Cephalonia for the day. Finni has been to Greece and Ithaki in general, many times, but for Robin, it's his first time, so they are doing the sights before the 4pm ferry takes them back to Ithakis big sister, Cephalonia. Robin has already pinpointed his next holiday will be in Kioni. Below - Sarah, Richard and Nigel are here from the UK and getting right into the traditional living of old by bucketing water from the Well and living with nature. Today however, they treated themselves to some fish at Rementzo in Frikes where there's water and beer on tap.

Tue 11 Sep - Below - A Bavarian Bus Tour coming from the direction of Kioni gets stuck between a village and a narrow road. Common sense would tell you that if the bus got from Piso Aetos to Kioni, he could probably get back, but a call for instruction was necessary, so the bus driver stopped in the middle of Frikes main street while he called his mutti. Locals tried to help, but there was no getting the driver off the phone.

Above Left - Maria and Jim are here from Newcastle Australia. Maria is a second generation Greek/Australia with roots in Stavros. Although something has always tugged at her heart strings when it came to her Ithacan connection, she has never visited the island before. Now that she has, she has fallen in love with it. Maria runs a successful bed and breakfast in Newcastle where she serves High Teas for her guests, while her husband Jim, who was a Detective Sergeant in the Newcastle Police Force before retirement, now after retirement, works in the gold mines in Mongolia. (Wow!) Maria and Jim will be celebrating 46 years of marriage with a week in Paris in just over a week. (Another Wow!) By the way, Jim is proof that there is life after retirement and that there is also life after death, noting he's been killed by Maria several times over their 46 year marriage and each time he comes back smiling. (It obviously works) Both Maria and Jim say this will not be their only visit to Ithaca. Now they have been bitten by the Ithaki Love Bug, they hope to return every couple of years from now on.

Right - Maria Papadima (DHKKI) and Sofia Papadatou are here from Kefalonia on the Campaign Trail for the SYRIZA Coalition Party. Below

Wed 12 Sep - Left - John and Beverly are here from the UK. They've been coming to the island for their holiday since 1972 and have no doubt seen alot of changes over these years. In 1972, Ithaki was barely on the map, let alone a holiday destination. We caught up with them getting some supplies from the corner shop in Raxi before they headed off on their walk to Frikes to have some lunch.

Fri 14 Sep - Left - In August, visitors to the island are rushing around to get as much into their annual leave as possible, but visitors coming in September are much more relaxed. There's no running this month, just strolling and taking in the views. Below - Flotilla time hasn't ended yet, still plenty of yachts coming into the Vathy harbor.

Fri 21 Sep - Above - Sharon Thomas and Adrian Lunney are back on Ithaca to catch up on sleep and relaxation after some hectic London times. Adrian is a Jazz guitarist who also dabbles in the Fiddle and Irish jigs.

Above - Jannene, Luke, Nick and Rory are here from Dublin on their first visit to Ithaca. They're staying in Lefki where the day is long and the sunsets are stunning.
