November is the time when the island gets ready to hibernate. Chairs and tables are taken inside, shutters and doors water-proofed and sofas readied for the weeks ahead in front of the Tv. Coats, scarves and gloves come out of the mothballs and the moped is put away during wet and windy days. The Olive Oil Presses dole out the liquid gold squeezed from the crop and Ithaki settles down for the chill. Rain falls more often and grey, thundery skies dominate the colour of this month. Winter is just around the corner. November is the time to bring out the Metaxa, the aperitif before an early night, the cure for a cold belly.
