In a good season, the olive trees are heavy with Ithakis' small black olives. Nearly everyone on the island has a couple of olive trees to their name, if not a grove, which has been passed down to them through the decades. Ithakis' olives are for domestic use, pressed for oil, which, when from a good crop, is valued like gold. Each day, Ithacans head off to their groves early in the morning with food, wine and a helping hand to spend the month of October combing olives from the trees. |
