March is the month for colour and celebrations. The Carnival, Independence Day and the 40 days before Easter. With many events to involve the entire island, makes this month the most bearable in the Winter Season. The days get longer and periods of blue skies and brilliant sunshine bring the community of Ithaca out of the darkness and back into the daylight. Visitors, ex patriots and relatives return to be with friends and family, and Ithaca begins to put on its' holiday face once more. March is painted with religious and iconic traditions that have woven together the fibre of this community for generations. The sound of hammers and drills echo through the valleys as workmen begin the restoration of Ithaca, getting it ready for Spring. Shop owners bring out a few chairs and tables tor their customers to take advantage of the sunny days, and before too long, the hardened and pale winter faces of Ithaki begin to loosen under the warming rays of March. The light, the sound and the smells of Spring are already in the air long before the first page of the April Calendar is turned over.
