A Day in May around the north of Ithaca

Sunday 25th May 2008

So let's see what's happening at Polis Bay. Oops, another tree chopping extravaganza. Out comes the stump that was killed after some bad pruning quite a few years ago and in goes a tree that dies the minute it's planted. Oh look, there's another shady old tree...chop! chop! Aah that's better.!?!!??

Sunday drivers beware. It's road works time. Just when you thought it was safe to get back on the asphalt to and from Frikes after one side of the road was finally fixed up, it's time to dig up the other side of the road. Ok, enough of the ugly, let's get on to what we all love about the island. In Kioni the kids, young and old, have the best water playground right on the bayside.

With todays 30C temp, it's no wonder people were heading to the beaches. Yes, the water is still a bit chilly, but not as chilly as the Atlantic or Pacific, so take a deep breath and dive in. 15 seconds is all it takes to make the transition from earth to water a wonderful experience.

Even Action Man takes in the rays on Frikes pier. This week hasn't been as busy as the last, but there's a really great feeling around the village as locals make the time to enjoy what Ithaki offers before they get too busy to do so. Right now there are lots of walkers and painters on the island. Everything seems very relaxed.

When this big yacht sailed into Frikes harbour, all eyes were on it. A bit embarrassing for the captain I should think, as he took around 6 tries before he managed to dock it. With most people in the village being sailing experts of one kind or another, there were more than a few comments at the lack of expertise.

"Why are you wearing a coat on a 30C day Niko?" asks Poppy. "I think I'm a bit sick." replies Niko. "Do you have a fever?" asks Poppy. "I don't know, let me feel" replies Niko. Niko feels his head and says "I still don't know, you have a feel Poppy" Poppy feels his head and says "I don't know either. Maybe if you take off your coat, you'll cool down. Just a thought" she says.
