The Vasilopoulos Family |
|
The Vasilopoulos family ancestors have lived on ithaca for generations. Gerasimos and Dimitra Vasilopoulos, their son Nikos and his wife Dina with their two daughters Dimitra and Olga, and daughters Olimpia and Meropi choose to make their lives, work and bring up their families here. They continue the family traditions which started over a century ago. The more recent history of the Vasilopoulos family begins with Vasilis, father of Gerasimos. He was a wood carver and carpenter. Much of his furniture still adorns the living rooms and bedrooms of northern Ithacan houses and is sought after by collectors of fine furniture and antiques. His hard work and commitment to local industry and produce was not lost on his son Gerasimos who in turn influenced his family into the trades and traditions they now hold dear. Gerasimos Vasilopoulos was 12 years old when he opened his first Taverna in Stavros in Northern Ithaca. Next door, his family had their own Burcher Shop from where they slaughtered and sold the meat of their farm animals. The Vasilopoulos family developed a tradition of making all their own produce whenever they could. With the devastating earthquake of 1953, the buildings were destroyed, but their traditions and commitment to Ithaca was not lost. Over the many years, the Vasilopouls family have lived and worked together in their Tavernas and building trades, passing on the traditions and their experiences to their children. Olimpia learned everything she knows from being in the kitchen with her mother and has become a fine traditional and innovative Chef, Nikos, an astute business man and builder and Meropi, a keen business woman with a love of village life and a flare for decorating, running successful restaurants and upholding the age-long traditions of the Vasilopoulos family.
