Anle and Nicholas choose an Ithaki Wedding
Friday 8th September 2006

Around 80 guests from around the world traveled to Ithaki to witness Anle Morais and Nicholas Hafner exchange vows at the church in Kioni, before going on to celebrate the Union at Avra Restaurant, locally known as Koronis. The significance of Kioni in the scheme of this wedding is that the grooms' grandmother Olga, is a Kioni Karantzis. Anle and Nicholas live in South Africa, but hope to spend more time on the island after they restore a family property. News of this wedding circulated earlier this year as requests for accommodation were sent from Kioni to Lefki to accommodate the invited guests. Hotel Nostos in Frikes was chosen as the official Wedding Hotel with more guests placed in some of the smaller accommodations on the northern isle. Organizing a wedding from thousands of miles away is no small feat, but mothers of bride and groom rose to the task to make everything run like clockwork and look beautiful to boot. The day was fine and mild, all the guests were safely on the island and the bride and groom were excited to start their lives as husband and wife. A promise made on Ithaki.

The Wedding was a mix of Greek and Western tradition. Pappas Babbis officiated the Orthodox side with his usual dedication and tolerance. After vows were exchanged, Some in the Wedding party made heart-felt and emotional speeches to direct the newly wed couple into the direction where love conquers all, after citing their own disappointments with love from which they have learned.
