Many visitors to the island want more than a day at the beach. If you are interested in discovering Ithaca through it's church history and culture, then this Churches Tour will enlighten you and give you the opportunity to go deeper into the island while you discover places not on the tourist trail.

Religion on Ithaca

The number of churches and chapels scattered across the island are indicative of the islanders' dedication to religion and their ethno-cultural roots despite the successive waves of occupation by foreign conquerors.

Most of the churches are situated within the boundaries of Ithacas villages and towns. In certain villages, the older churches hold prominent positions in the town, such as Sotiras in Stavros, Ag. Marina in Exoghi and Panaghias in Anoghi.

The style of both newer and older churches is the basilica with a single aisle roof and usually a wooden arched ceiling.

Most have been built with local stone. Remarkable workmanship is evident in the icon screens, some icon screens have a Russian origin, such as Panaghia ton Eissodon in Exoghi. Ithacan churches are usually whitewashed, with the cupula in a sky blue or indigo colour.

On Ithaca, wherever you look you will see a church. Chapels on the hilltops, in ravines on capes by the sea. Some are accessed by road, others by path and some even by sea.

One of the best known chapels is that of Katharon Monastery on Mt. Niriton. It is believed to be dated back to 1696.

Ithacas Christian heritage has been illuminated by distinguished personalities such as St. Raphael and Ossios Papoulakis.
