August 2019

Wednesday 21st

The weatherman says it will be perfect until the end of the month. Still lots and lots of people getting off the ferries and coming to Ithaki. I think it will continue at least until the end of August, but I have a feeling that we'll see this influx reaching into September also.

There's been a definite change this year in comparison to the past 10 years. Looks like the fear of austerity has been erased from the minds of the visitors, although some people still think that they can use an accommodation for instance and then refuse to pay the whole price as if they have some invisible right. I suggest if you don't like your accommodation you don't wait 10 days to declare it, but say it immediately and don't say you like the accommodation when asked, only to change your mind when the bill comes.

Above - Ag. Ioannis beach is one of the popular beaches beneath Lefki, unfortunately some of the smaller coves and beaches have had their paths to the beach closed off to the public. Someone should be asking why and how and then someone else should be answering that question...just saying.

Below - With mesh going up on the edges of Ithaca to cover up any rock-fall, another question should be asked. Why is the rock being excavated from the roadside on the road to Anoghi? Was it a private excavation or a public? and if public? Why? and if private, there should be some consequence for making this road unsafe from rock-fall and maybe even undermining the road itself from the top of this excavation. Once it rains there could also be further negative effects. This isn't the only spot along this road, there are quite a few others.

Below - Ithaca is not only a paradise for those who visit and stay on shore, but also for the thousands of yachts that moor in our harbours and bays.

Above - Yes there are mountain cows too in Anoghi. Goats don't have all the fun.

Friday 23rd - Already into the last week of August. If you're on holiday, I'm sure the time is just flying by. It's flying by for us who work here also.

Sunday 25th - Just a few days shy of September and it still feels like peak season in August.

Below - George and Kristiana Lakkotryppis. If you're not too up on who's who in politics in the med, let me tell you that Mr. Lakkotrypis is the Cypriot MInister for Energy, Commerce and Industry, here on Ithaki for his annual holiday.

Above - My guess the sunscreen is being applied a little too late.

Tuesday 27th - Below - The Ithacan Philanthropic Society members meet up with Chrisostomos Manias from Xarilaos Tsigonias (Ithacan Folk Dance Group) in Vathy over a drink to discuss what the Ithacan Club can do to support the Dance Group.

Thursday 29th - Below  - Perahori village above Vathy has some of the most spectacular views across the southern part of ithaca that you could possibly imagine. It also has an extremely friendly community. Each Year in July the village holds its annual Wine Festival.

Above - It's always nice when people come up to me to introduce themselves. This is Rolf and Mariska from the Netherlands. They've been coming to Ithaki for 4 years. They stay in Vathy, but swim at Polis Bay and keep up with the news of ithaki through ithacagreece.com.

Below - Xarilaos Tsigonias Dance Group from Ithaca featured the dance groups, To Fanari and Xoropoula in the Vathy village square last night. A big audience gathered to watch Greek Dancing. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay until the end due to a camera malfunction. Apologies to the group, but CLICK HERE or on photo below to see some of the photographs taken before the camera stopped working.

Summer Holiday on Ithaca Greece

Wednesday 21st,

Friday 23rd - Summer is not over, infact, there are equal parts coming to the island as they are leaving.

Sunday 25th - At ferry time in Frikes, don't expect to get through to Kioni or if coming from Kioni, to get through to Stavros. Bumper to bumper traffic both in people and vehicles.

Tuesday 27th - Below - On Wednesday evening around 7pm, the Ithacan Folk Dance Group, Xarilaos Tsigonias, will parade from Karamela Cafe on the Bayside to Vathy Square before performing with Dancers from Kefalonia. Get along to the square. It's free. You'll see some great Greek dancing! See you there.

Thursday 29th - There are so many people on the island. I think the locals are very pleased with how the 2019 Season has panned out.
