THURSDAY
14TH AUGUST - THE IONIAN SUFFERED AN EARTHQUAKE
OF 6.4 ON THE RICHTER AND LASTED AROUND 20 SECONDS. ON ITHACA
PEOPLE WERE WOKEN FROM THEIR SLEEP BY IT AT 8.15AM. ITHACA DUE TO IT'S STRICT
BUILDING CODE GUARRANTEEING QUAKE PROOF HOUSES (WHICH CAN REPORTEDLY WITHSTAND
UP TO 9 OR 10) GOT AWAY WITH SHOCK,SHAKE AND SOME LOOSE RUBBLE FALLING ONTO
THE ROADS. LEFKADA IT'S CLOSE NEIGHBOUR HAD SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE AND INJURIES.
AFTERSHOCKS CONTINUED THROUGH THE DAY. THE EARTHQUAKE WAS THE BIGGEST SINCE
THE BIG ONE IN 1953. THE OLDER LOCALS WERE FEARFULLY REMINDED OF THAT CATASTROPHIC
EVENT AND THE YOUNG GOT AN INKLING OF WHAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE. EDUCATED
EVALUATION DEDUCE THIS EARTHQUAKE WAS THE MAIN ONE AND THAT THERE WILL NOT
BE A BIGGER QUAKE TO COME OVER THE COMING DAYS OR WEEKS. |

PANIGHIRI FESTIVAL ON FRIKDAY 15th AUGUST 2003. This
years Festival was huge! The Square was packed to the edges and across
to the fields as hordes of people from all over Ithaca came to dance,
eat and be VERY MERRY.

August 24th -
The island
is definitely quieter today. The mainlanders are heading back to their
cities and towns in droves and the buzz and intensity of the 'Greek'
High Season is mellowing out, but it's not over yet. Here come the Italians
and we are told the Uk Tour Groups are booked out for weeks to come.
August 27th -
Last night
there was drama in the skies. A massive storm hit the Ionian, including
Ithaca. Continuous sheet lightning lit up the sky like disco strobes
at the 'Universe Rave Party' from about 1am into early morning, and
if anyone got any sleep with the thunder, it would be very surprising.
The heat and moisture build up over the weeks made the sky roar, explode
and then implode. A Sci-Fi-like experience. Felt and sounded like Armageddon.
Could have been worse however, we could have had another earthquake
with this storm. Pick your poison - get hit by a falling building or
struck by lightning. Whether you love or hate storms, the visuals and
the surround-sound were spectacular. Just a note, 5 years ago,
no one on Ithaca ever talked about the weather. too boring. Now it's
the number one topic of conversation. Don't think the weather will ever
be boring again. By the way, last nights rain dried up quickly in the
morning sun. Welcome to the Mediterranean Tropics.
