Fishing for sardines and Calamari brings in the month of October. Usually, the days are still mild, so Ithaca makes the most of a sunny day, before there are too few to enjoy. During this month the sky can be as blue and as vibrant as it can be black with storm fronts, unpredictable and dramatic. In the early days of October, restaurants along the bay sides, pack up and leave their pieces of holiday ithaca to the elements Down come the Canopies, in go the tables and chairs, and the pot belly stove gets fired up. Rougher seas wash pebbles and wood onto the lowlands along the bay, and occasionally the skies threaten rain with thunderous storms bellowing behind black clouds. 8 force winds will stop the ferry to Patra, and its' clear that Ithaca is worlds away from the real world, well hidden from sight on a wild weather day. The sunburnt slopes of Summer transform and rejuvenate themselves with October rains, and lush grasses blanket Ithaca in green, leaving everything smelling fresh and new. The days through October are occupied with olive picking and pruning and shooting rabbit, with rain-proofing homes and getting the TV reception just right for the Soaps that keep the community entertained when it 's dark by 6pm. At night, to keep the damp out of the bones, the locals warm themselves with a Metaxa Cognac at their local Café, and with November, Winter is truly on it's way.
